PRACTICAL DEFENSIVE KNIFE TRAINING

KNIVES: In many places around the world this is considered a "knife". This machete measures from elbow to tip of middle finger. The owner of this machete referred to this as his knife and showed me how some of his other blades were much larger and longer. Many blade arts come from cultures that utilize long blades like this machete however long blade training may not transfer skills over to smaller knives. Here in the U.S. we have a culture of small knives. Pocket knives of 2"-4" length and small fixed blades 2"-5" are the standard. Because of this, practical training time should focus on small knives, those commonly seen in our environment and commonly carried such as folding knives and small fixed blades. Having spent 20+ years studying stick and long blade martial arts I understand the allure of long blade training. As a martial artist, I love it. However, if you have limited time, resources and need a practical defensive blade foundation then study a small knife art first. My primary recommendations include: Craig Douglas EWO @shivworks_and_alumni, Larry Lindenman @pointdriventraining ,AMOK! with Tom Sotis and Pekiti-Tirsia. Each of these include an essential training element: opposition. Like wrestling, BJJ, Boxing or Muay Thai Kickboxing, someone is opposing you and trying to NOT let you do what you want. Just like real life. Consider: how much time do you have? Are you studying an art or self protection? Is there opposition in your blade training? How complicated is it? What are your goals: to learn to attack someone offensively with a knife or defend your life with a knife as a last resort? The knife is one piece of the multidisciplinary training puzzle; research, prioritize and execute. #MDTS #training #multidisciplinary #machete #smallknifeskills #shivworks #amok #pekititirsia #knife #defensiveknife
