MDTS Concealed Carry Principles

CAPABILITY, RESISTANCE & “TRAINING”

CAPABILITY, RESISTANCE & "TRAINING": The other night in #BJJ class I had plans. Plans to execute certain techniques I've been studying, thinking about and working on. In 30 min of sparring (rolling) with 5 different training partners I was only able to execute a couple of those techniques repeatedly. Why not more? What happened? When drilling I can pull them all off. However, during sparring (rolling in BJJ), the chaos, the movement, the unpredictability, my training partners will and pressure changed those plans. The fact is drilling is not trained: knowing a hundred techniques or tactics does not equate to being able to enact, at will, in-fight, said techniques & tactics. This ability only comes over time and repeated exposure to the chaos of working against resistant opponents. Resistance accustoms you to disappointment, hardens you to contact and discomfort, teaches humility and shows you what you are capable of today, here, now, not just what you think you're capable of. Note the word humility. The best fighters, the best instructors, I know, are humble. They're humble because of hundreds of hours losing, failing, getting beat and beaten but continuing to work to execute their plans. Hundreds of hours drilling and practicing techniques and tactics and then testing them via the chaos, movement, will and pressure of resistant training partners or opponents. Muscles require resistance to get bigger and stronger and so does martial ability. With boxing or kickboxing it's sparring, BJJ its rolling, shooting it's force-on-force with dye marking cartridges or Airsoft, defensive knife it's sparring. Whatever your style, system or method there needs to be resistance. If there isn't, you're not "training" to develop martial ability, you're simply indulging in a hobby.
